Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society Applications Now Open

SIGMA CIRCLE | University of Maryland

RECOGNIZING CAMPUS COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP

Omicron Delta Kappa – one of the most prestigious national societies to recognize leadership – is now accepting applications for the Spring 2017 semester. Sigma Circle of ODK at College Park began in 1927 and, since then, has initiated over 4000 students, faculty, and honorary members.  ODK tapped Senator Joe Tydings in 1950 when he was playing varsity lacrosse and US Congressman Steny Hoyer in 1962 when he was SGA Vice President.  ODK has also initiated other proven leaders such as State Senate President Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, President Wallace Loh, Coach Brenda Frese, ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt, and honorary members President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Civil Rights Activist Julian Bond. The names of all of these outstanding leaders, along with many others, are engraved on the ODK Fountain on McKeldin Mall.

ODK brings together junior, senior, and graduate students with our most outstanding faculty members, to recognize campus leaders and to encourage other students to achieve.  We seek accomplished leaders in five areas of campus community life.

SCHOLARSHIP

CAMPUS OR COMMUNITY SERVICE, SOCIAL, RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES AND CAMPUS GOVERNMENT

ATHLETICS

JOURNALISM, SPEECH AND THE MASS MEDIA

 CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

Omicron Delta Kappa requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40 for juniors (60-89 credits), 3.49 for seniors (90 credits), and 3.86 for graduate students to be considered for membership.

ODK needs your help to identify talented and deserving leaders for consideration!

Applications are available ONLINE now! Students should visit www.odk.umd.edu to begin the application process.  Applications must be received electronically no later than 11:59 p.m., Friday, February 10, 2017.

Book Talk: Gary LaFree and Martha Crenshaw "Countering Terrorism: No Simple Solutions"

Date: Thursday, February 23, 2017Time: 11:00am - 12:30pm
Location:
Margaret Brent Room, Stamp Student Union, University of Maryland, College Park, MD

On Thursday, February 23, 2017, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, Gary LaFree and Martha Crenshaw will give a book talk on their new publication "Countering Terrorism: No Simple Solutions". The event will talk place in the Margaret Brent Room of the UMD Stamp Student Union - the book talk is free and open to the public, but RSVP's are appreciated.
Two leaders in the field of terrorism studies, Dr. LaFree and Dr. Crenshaw make it clear why it is so difficult to create policy to counter terrorism: the foes are multiple and often amorphous; the study of the field dogged by disagreement on basic definitional and methodological issues; and the creation of policy hobbled by an exacting standard – the counterterrorist must succeed all the time, the terrorist only once.
Dr. Crenshaw is a senior fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, as well as professor of political science at Stanford University and a professor of government emerita at Wesleyan University.
In addition to serving as the director of START, Dr. LaFree is a professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Maryland. He is also the past president of the American Society of Criminology, a member of the Attorney General’s Science Advisory Board, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Law and Justice.
“Countering Terrorism: No Simple Solutions” will hit bookstores in January but it is available for pre-order now on Brookings and Amazon.

Summer Workshop on Analysis of Military Operations and Strategy 2017 Call for Applications

Twenty First Annual Summer Workshop on
Analysis of Military Operations and Strategy (SWAMOS 2017)
to be held at Cornell University, July 9-23, 2017.

The workshops held in the previous twenty years have been extremely successful experiences in intellectual community-building, and participants each year have responded that the experience exceeded their expectations and proved critical in their professional development.
SWAMOS will pay all travel and living expenses for the workshop.

Our objective is to provide an opportunity for people who have a general exposure to security issues but who would like to become academically conversant with military policy studies, and who would incorporate material on the subject when teaching courses on international relations or foreign policy.
SWAMOS focuses on subjects that are no longer taught in detail in most universities.  Although some attention is given to guerrilla warfare and counterinsurgency, the program aims primarily at developing a grasp of conventional warfare.  Last year’s syllabus can be found on our website at:
SWAMOS is funded by a private foundation, and is not sponsored by any government agency.

More information than appears in the attached brochure may be obtained from the SWAMOS program coordinator, Emily Holland at ejh2132@columbia.edu or swamos-info@columbia.edu.

The application and letter of recommendation must arrive by March 1, 2017. Fore more information go to www.siwps.org/swamos.
