START Hourly Research Assistant Position

The Unconventional Weapons and Technology Division (UWT) of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is now hiring Research Assistants to work at START’s headquarters at the University of Maryland, College Park. This is an hourly position, with an initial term of 3 months (starting in October 2016), with continued employment contingent on new projects being awarded.

-Coursework or research experience on the topic of RN and/or terrorism
-Has previously worked at least one complete semester as a START intern

Department of State Foreign Affairs Research Analyst Position

This position is located in the Office of Opinion Research, Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR/OPN). The incumbent is responsible for designing and implementing public opinion polls in Latin America on political, economic, and social issues. Duties include daily review and reporting on the subject matter as it involves U.S. intelligence interests, preparations of INR Assessments and Office of Opinion Research analyses, reports, briefs, and alerts daily intelligence briefing responsibilities for the Assistant Secretary, the Secretary, and other high-ranking officials in the Department of State. The Civis Social Science Team empowers clients to make good decisions based on sound social science methods. The team is responsible for the execution of survey research and serves as a clearinghouse for social science expertise. As a social science intern, you’ll work with the team members to help design research projects, program surveys, manage surveys in the field, report on results, and support R&D initiatives. The intern will conduct a research project over the course of the summer that contributes to the development of new methodologies or tools used by the social science team.

Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Transnational Threats Department

There is a vacancy for a P1 contracted position of Associate Programme Officer with the OSCE Transnational Threats Department/Action Against Terrorism Unit.

The Department to Address Transnational Threats (TNT Department) supports the Secretary General in functioning as the focal point of Organization-wide programmatic activities relating to countering transnational threats and in ensuring co-ordination and coherence of action across all three dimensions and among all OSCE executive structures, while respecting their mandates. The TNT Department comprises the Co-ordination Cell, the Strategic Police Matters Unit, the Anti-Terrorism Issues Unit and the Border Security and Management Unit.

Following decisions of the OSCE participating States taken at the Permanent Council and Ministerial Council meetings, in particular, PC Decision No. 1063 on the “OSCE Consolidated Framework for the Fight against Terrorism”, the Action against Terrorism Unit (ATU) acts as the focal point and as an information resource and implementation partner for OSCE counter-terrorism activities.

Qualifications:
- University degree in international affairs, international law, political sciences, social sciences or security studies;
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in international affairs; previous experience with OSCE or other international organizations, especially in project management, would be a distinct asset;
- Experience in multilateral affairs, project co-ordination and implementation is highly desirable. - Practical experience in working for or in co-ordination with the UN system would be an asset;
Experience in anti-terrorism-related technical assistance programmes and projects would be a distinct asset;
- Familiarity with concepts and capacity-building in the area of preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalization that lead to terrorism (VERLT) is highly desirable;
- Planning and organizing skills with ability to multi-task and adhere to tight deadlines;
- Excellent computer skills, with practical experience in Microsoft applications;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; knowledge of another OSCE official language, particularly Russian, would be an asset;
- A team player with the ability to work with people of different nationalities, religions and cultural backgrounds;
- Demonstrated gender awareness and sensitivity, and an ability to integrate a gender perspective into tasks and activities.
