MARYLAND CENTER FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH - 2018 Maryland Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester, and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment and other competitive opportunities.

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for an MSS award: if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline; if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline; and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2018. All academic majors are eligible.


Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2018 awards will be 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

HHMI Undergraduate Fellowship Applicants Please Note: Students applying for Summer 2018 funding through the HHMI Undergraduate Fellowship program will be considered for Summer 2018 MSS awards automatically, through the HHMI application process. All MSS eligibility requirements must be met by applicants considered through the HHMI application process. Eligible students who wish to have their Summer 2018 HHMI research proposals considered for an MSS award do not need to submit a separate MSS application.

The Online Safety team within Facebook Security analyzes current trends in user safety, investigates cases, and develops solutions to mitigate future risk. Responsibilities

• Support investigations into Facebook and Instagram accounts to identify sources of abusive behavior
• Summarize and present information from investigations and reports to internal teams
• Help to build and chart networks to stop abuse

Minimum Qualifications

Event: Free Speech/Hate Speech Open Discussion

The Joint President/Senate Inclusion & Respect Task Force has developed several working groups to tackle major elements of its charge. The Free Speech/Hate Speech working group is hosting an open discussion on the difficult intersections between free speech and hate speech on Monday, November 6, 2017 from 5-6:30pm in 6137 McKeldin Library. Members of the working group will briefly describe the legal framework and then hold a collaborative discussion on how best to address free speech and hate speech at the university.

Research Assistant, Unconventional Weapons and Technology (UWT) Research Division

The Unconventional Weapons and Technology Division (UWT) of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) is now hiring Research Assistants to work at START’s headquarters at the University of Maryland, College Park. This is an hourly position, beginning Nov. 1, 2017 and with an initial term of 3 months.

Responsibilities: The Research Assistants will initially work on a Horizon Scanning project focusing on non-state actor engagement with radiological and nuclear (RN) weapons. As a part of this effort, the research assistants will primarily be tasked with identifying signals (pieces of information) from a variety of technology and security related sources that will facilitate the identification of future potential changes in non-state RN threat paradigms. The research assistant will likely also participate in the subsequent synthesis/analysis phase of the project and ultimately in the production of materials designed to aid policymakers in the formation of forward-looking RN defense and counterproliferation policies.

Required Qualifications:
- Possess or are completing a bachelor’s degree (junior or senior standing if degree not completed)
- Possess at least a 3.6 GPA
- Strong writing and research skills
- Some degree of both scientific and geopolitical literacy (being well versed in at least one of the two)
- Previous database/dataset coding experience
- Ability to independently manage coinciding tasks in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:
- Possess a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, physical sciences, history or engineering
- Coursework or research experience on issues of proliferation, RN weapons and/or terrorism
- Has previously worked at least one complete semester as a START intern
- The compensation for this position will be between $15 and $20/hour (depending upon education and experience). The person(s) selected for this position will work on-site at START’s headquarters, adjacent to the University of Maryland, College Park.

Each year the Carnegie Endowment offers approx. 10 one-year fellowships to highly qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. Carnegie Junior Fellows provide research assistance to senior researchers working on the Carnegie Endowment's projects such as non-proliferation, democracy building, trade, US leadership, China-related issues and Russian/Eurasian studies. (See the list of next year’s specific project areas below.) 

Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials. Junior Fellows spend one year (beginning August 1st, 2018) at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC. Positions are full-time and include a salary and benefits package (see details further below). Carnegie Junior Fellows are selected through a highly competitive process from a pool of nominees from close to 300 colleges.
