New Sessions! BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS for Critical Language Study

Are you strongly focused on studying a critical language, and using your language skills in your career? Are you very interested in working for the US government in an internationally-related role? If so, learn about the Boren Scholarship program!

The Boren Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates (US citizens) who want to study abroad for one or two semesters (preferably) in 2019-20 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Maryland has ranked # 1 in the nation in Boren Scholarships awarded for the past 7 years!!!

Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America, and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2019, Fall 2019 and/or Spring 2020. 

*The Boren Scholarship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year service expectation.*

Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for International Affairs

Are you aiming at a career in International Affairs? Learn about the Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment program - students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the State Department and USAID Foreign Services are encouraged to apply.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. **Students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the State Department and USAID Foreign Services are encouraged to apply.** 

The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program program takes place at Howard University in Washington DC for six weeks beginning in mid-June. It includes academic courses and additional seminars and visits to give students exposure to key policymakers and practitioners of international affairs. 

Who Can Apply:  U.S. Citizens – Full-time undergraduate students (first-year students see note below) – GPA of 3.2 or higher required – all majors – Students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service are encouraged to apply.

IMPORTANT: The selection committee may consider students who have completed their first year by the start of the program if these students have outstanding academic backgrounds and significant international experience.

Teaching English in France Information Session - Nov 5

Attention Graduating Seniors and Recent Grads - Teach English in France!
 
Are you ready to expand your cultural horizons and share your language and culture with French students? The Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) offers you the opportunity to work in France for 7 months teaching English to French students of all ages. Each year, over 1,300 American citizens and permanent residents teach in public schools across all regions of France and in the overseas departments of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and RĂ©union.

Fulbright Summer Institutes for Sophomores/Freshmen (U.S. citizens)

US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for U.S. citizens to come to the UK. These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (U.S. citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.

Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance. 

The program application will open in early December. This was the list of Summer Institutes available for US students in 2018:

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be U.S. Citizens; have a GPA of 3.7 or higher; be 18 or older; be a second or first year student, and/or have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes.

Please note: this program gives preference to students who have had little or no study or travel outside of the US.

BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will soon be accepting applications from undergraduate students seeking funding for Winter 2019 and Spring 2019 learning experiences. If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an experiential learning opportunity, apply for BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds. Note that BSOS accepts applications for these funds on a biannual basis. During the Fall semester for Winter & Spring learning experiences and during the Spring semester for Summer & Fall experiences.

  • Have completed at least one semester (Spring 2018 or earlier) at the University of Maryland.
  • Have at least one semester (Spring 2019 or later) left as a student at the University of Maryland - Awards will be made for Winter 2019 and Spring 2019 experiences, thus seniors who are graduating Winter 2019 are ineligible to apply.
  • Be enrolled in a BSOS major or an ENSP track housed within BSOS.
  • Submit a complete application (all questions answered) by the deadline November 19 at 9 AMIncomplete applications will not be considered.
  • Complete the learning experience for which you apply in Winter 2019 or Spring 2019. If you choose not to complete the experience, you must notify the Selection Committee (bsos-scholarships@umd.edu) and the funds will be rescinded.
  • Notification date is December 7. All recipients should plan to attend the college’s scholarship dinner in the spring semester. Questions regarding BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds or the application process should be directed to bsos-scholarships@umd.edu.

  • Preference will be given for NEW, rather than continuing, experiences (i.e. starting a new internship, as opposed to continuing in a position from a previous semester or summer).

Junior Fellows Summer 2019

The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) at the University of Maryland is pleased to once again offer a 10-week summer internship to rising juniors and seniors with an interest in survey methodology.

JPSM, in a unique partnership, brings together faculty from the University of Maryland and the University of Michigan, as well as researchers from Westat, a leading survey organization based in Rockville, MD. Through its educational offerings the Joint Program attempts to serve both professionals currently working in statistical agencies and survey organizations, and to educate the next generation of survey professionals.

Each summer JPSM sponsors a Junior Fellows Program for a limited number of extremely successful and talented undergraduate students. Successful applicants are granted paid research assistantships in a Federal or private statistical agency in the Washington, DC area. They participate in weekly seminars at JPSM and elsewhere in the area on survey methodology and career options in survey research. Throughout the summer students learn about surveys, statistics, graduate studies, and how statistical agencies and survey organizations work, and they meet other students from across the country along with the JPSM faculty.

Our single nominee is then reviewed by the System Student Council and their finalists are forwarded to the Chancellor and from his desk they are forwarded to the Governor. In the past, College Park has been represented by outstanding scholar leaders.

IGE | Paid Undergraduate Internship & Graduate Fellowship Opportunities

The Institute for Global Engagement (IGE) is pleased to announce the launch of its fall undergraduate internship and graduate fellowship program with the generous support of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s Vision & Call program. This program seeks to cultivate the next generation of Christian leaders that are passionate about religious freedom, international affairs, and peacebuilding. Interns will work in an agile and innovative NGO environment that engages foreign governments and civil society leaders, Capitol Hill, and the donor community. The program features an intensive training program on faith and leadership as well as the benefit of joining the Murdock Trust’s growing Vision & Call Network and have the opportunity to participate in a Vision & Call intern retreat in Yelm, Washington in the fall. IGE has 4 paid positions for the fall semester, based in Washington, DC.
