U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program

The U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program is accepting applications NOW for unpaid fall 2018 internships.  The Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations (CSO) invites your students to consider a 10-week internship in our bureau in Washington DC.  Students who are studying conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and related foreign policy issues could be tomorrow’s diplomats - future diplomats whom the Department wants to hire.

We accept numerous students each semester to work side by side with our staff on projects to address atrocity prevention, countering violent extremism, promoting defections from armed groups, defeating ISIS, preventing election violence, and supporting peace processes.  Interning in CSO provides an opportunity for hands on government work experience, enhancing research and analytic skills, and valuable networking.  Applications for the fall 2018 semester close on March 2, 2018.

To learn more about the State Department and to consider CSO as their first choice for their fall internship, please visit the following website:  https://www.state.gov/j/cso/

Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows

Honoring a Champion of the Underrepresented
Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings
The prestigious Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program is the University of Maryland’s premiere undergraduate leadership and public policy training program. It honors the legacy of Howard Peters “Pete” Rawlings and the work he did as a Maryland delegate. Participants in the Fellows program are provided multiple opportunities--both academic and experiential--to grow as ethical leaders and become champions for those whose voices may otherwise go unheard in the leadership and decision-making process.  Maintaining a commitment to those historically underrepresented in leadership positions is central to the program.
The program works with students, faculty, alumni, and local leaders to provide undergraduates with a commitment to cultural pluralism, advocacy, and change with the necessary skills, resources, and support to prepare them for leadership roles during the school year and after program completion.
If you have at least two semesters remaining at the university and a commitment to public leadership, you are strongly encouraged to apply. Fellows design and implement their own community action projects, take courses on leadership, serve at an internship, and meet elected officials, community advocates, and non-profit leaders.

Apply for BSOS Student Experience Funds!

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is launching the BSOS Undergraduate Experience Funds!

These funds assist undergraduate BSOS majors engaged in experiential learning outside the classroom, such as unpaid internships, research, service learning, and professional or academic conferences. The funds are intended to help offset expenses related to such activities like travel/transportation expenses, professional attire, and other opportunity costs (for example: the need to give up a part-time paid job in order to take an unpaid internship).

If you are a BSOS student with financial need that is preventing you from taking advantage of an unpaid opportunity, we encourage you to apply for BSOS Undergraduate ExperienceFunds.

Applications for the summer 2018 and fall 2018 experiences are due on March 28, 2018 by 9 a.m. Click here to apply. Before submitting your application, make sure to review the eligibility criteria here.

Questions regarding the funds or the application process can be e-mailed to bsos-scholarships@umd.edu.

UMD-Summer: Singapore: Religious Rehabilitation of Terrorists

Interested in non-violent approaches to countering terrorism? Singapore was one of the first nations in the world to develop religious rehabilitation programs for individuals detained on charges relating to terrorism. In this program, you will study with the Muslim clerics and scholars who built a wave of programs aimed at addressing terrorism in non-violent, non-criminal spaces, beginning in Singapore, but also extending to the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Clerics from Singapore’s Religious Rehabilitation Group and scholars from Nanyang Technological University will host us, as we study reasons that individuals leave terrorist groups and movements and the theories behind these programs created to dissuade people from committing violence. This course is open to all—no knowledge of terrorism required—and its structure will allow you to pursue other work, internship, and study opportunities during the same summer you travel with us. We will conduct 5 weeks of asynchronous online coursework, when you can be working from anywhere at any time, and we will spend 10, immersive, exciting days in Singapore. In Singapore, we won't just study--we'll also eat at a cat cafe, take a tea appreciation workshop, do a rain forest canopy walk, get a fish pedicure, watch Chinese street opera and see a soccer match!
