Center for Global Security Research Student Intern

The Center for Global Security Research, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is now accepting applications for fall 2017 student internships.

Essential Duties At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt):
- Gather and analyze the data or information in support of ongoing research.
- Communicate research project(s), document work, and have technical knowledge based on the level of education.

Qualifications At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt):
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited university and actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering, computational sciences, materials science and engineering, cyber security, interactive data mining, political science, international relations and related fields.
- Ability to apply basic and scientific approaches to problem-solving (plan, analyze and execute).
- Demonstrated effective communication skills.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
- Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work in a team environment.

Essential Duties at the Graduate or Recent Graduate Level (Exempt):
- Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientists in research and development projects.

Qualifications at the Graduate or Recent Graduate Level (Exempt):
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited university and actively pursuing a graduate degree or a recent Bachelors or Masters graduate within one year in nuclear engineering, computational sciences, materials science and engineering, cyber security, interactive data mining, political science, international relations and related fields.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in nuclear engineering, computational sciences, materials science and engineering, cyber security, interactive data mining, political science, international relations and related fields.
- Experience applying basic engineering or scientific principles to solve technical problems.
- Ability to work in a team environment.


CGSR’s research objectives include: Exploring the dynamics of potential 21st century strategic conflicts, (i.e., those with a potential nuclear aspect) and to formulate ideas about how to achieve U.S. deterrence and other objectives in such conflicts. Exploring the sources and characteristics of strategic competition in the emerging security environment and to formulate organizing concepts to enhance the competitive position of the United States and its allies and partners over the long term. Identify whether and how technically-based approaches can address new challenges to national and international security. Catalyze broader national and international thinking about the requirements of effective deterrence, assurance, and strategic stability in a changed and changing security environment. Assist in the development of new generations of experts motivated by a clear view of the changed and changing security environment.
