“Beyond NATO: A New Security Architecture for Eastern Europe”

Russia’s recent somewhat secretive wargames have stoked fears that President Putin’s assertiveness in Crimea and Ukraine might be extended to the Baltic States or elsewhere in Eastern Europe. Dr. O’Hanlon’s Brookings’ Marshall monograph “Beyond NATO: A New Security Architecture for Eastern Europe “is extraordinarily timely. We are fortunate that he will be sharing his thinking on this important matter with us.

Michael O’Hanlon is a good friend of this Council, a highly respected scholar, and a most active commentator.

He holds a Ph.D. degree in Public and International Affairs from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees, also from Princeton, are in the physical sciences. He served in the Peace Corps teaching physics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and was a national security analyst for the Congressional Budget Office before joining Brookings. At present, in addition to being responsible for foreign policy research at the Brookings Institution, he is a visiting lecturer at Princeton University and an adjunct professor at Columbia, Syracuse, and Denver Universities.

Michael O’Hanlon is known to Council members from his memorable prior addresses here and from his extensive commentaries: over a dozen authored or coauthored works on technological change and the future of warfare, missile defense, homeland security, hard power, land warfare, the Obama foreign policy, North Korea, Afghanistan, and U.S.-China relations. He has made over 3,000 major television and radio appearances since 9-11 and has written hundreds of opinion pieces including dozens in both the Washington Post and the New York Times
